Which famous superstar was jealous of Harry Chapin?

Harry Chapin was a well-known singer/songwriter, storyteller, poet, film maker and who would become as well known for his humanitarian efforts—particularly his anti-hunger crusade—as for his music.

His songs “Sniper,” “Taxi” and “Cat’s In The Cradle” have been mentioned as some of the best “storytelling” songs ever written.

As a matter of fact, his music was so good, that when a young pianist named Billy Joel released a song in 1973 entitled “Piano Man” (you’ve probably heard of it 😊), which tells of the story of a gifted musician, wasting his talents on a somewhat tattered and mangy clientele in a West Los Angeles bar lounge, many thought the song was Harry Chapin’s.

In 2020, Billy Joel admitted he was jealous of Chapin and it irked him that his song was being attributed to Harry. In a documentary titled: Harry Chapin:

When In Doubt, Do Something Joel makes the comment at the beginning of the film, “It used to bother me, but it doesn't bother me anymore," he says. "Now I take it as a compliment because the truth is Harry Chapin wrote the best story songs."

Harry Chapin released 14 singles that became hits on at least one national music chart; many still being heard on radio and in film over 40 years later.
