Were Counterculture Icons Targeted? The FBI's unusual investigation of Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead

Ah, the 60s. What unique times socially and musically - in particular 1965, when Bob Dylan went “electric” at Newport, breaking the barriers of folk music to introduce electronic instruments into his quickly growing and important musical catalogue. The Beatles had recorded Rubber Soul, which moved away from the “She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah” lyrics to explore songs from the perspective and maturity of 20-something adults. “Norwegian Wood,” “Think for Yourself,” and “Nowhere Man” were ground-breaking songs from the most influential band in the world, with critics hailing these compositions as taking The Beatles in a different and extremely influential musical and social direction.
In late 1965, San Francisco started evolving as a musical haven for singers and songwriters. Two of the most well-known were The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. Additionally, San Francisco became a home for a new youth movement – The Hippie Generation – which was based heavily on peace, love, sex and drugs - specifically psychedelic drugs.
It should be no surprise then that parents, civic, and religious leaders became concerned that the youth would soon be lured into becoming drug addicts being indoctrinated with anti-American views by the then-current music. Both bands were dominating the charts with songs that had drug references in the lyrics and the FBI thought they could be a threat to national security. However, The Hippie Generation was more interested in “flower power,” getting high, or taking an LSD trip, than in actively overthrowing the government.
As Far Out Magazine recently mentioned in a story, “Nevertheless, law enforcement was convinced that most of the band’s drug intake was causing various kids to succumb to the darker side of life and corrupt(ing) their minds.”
The FBI decided to infiltrate The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane by dressing up undercover as fans and blending in with the crowds, apparently to attempt to overhear any subversive American conversations taking place.
Far Out reported that the FBI went so far as to bring The Grateful Dead up on charges, stating that “LSD originates from San Francisco through a renowned rock group called The Grateful Dead.”
The most dangerous (or outrageous) thing that surfaced later with either band was as a result of the actions of Jefferson Airplane’s lead singer, Grace Slick. Slick, who had attended the same finishing school as Tricia Nixon (daughter of former president Richard Nixon), was invited to a party at the White House with the intent of dropping a couple of hits of acid into Nixon’s drink that night. However, her mischievous plans were dashed when her plus one, political and social activist, founder of the Yippies, and member of the Chicago Seven, Abbie Hoffman, was turned away at the gate.
Per Far Out, as FBI reports became known and shared, even the agency said they were being too paranoid - “It’s easy to say that it was a foolish time for unwarranted investigation, but I think you have to look at this in the context of the times.”
Would then-FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover ever admit defeat? Hmmm, most probably not. But I’m sure the agency would continue to state that given the times, the growing concern and national unrest over the Vietnam War, and the growing use of psychedelic drugs, it was “better to be safe than sorry.”
