I like Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash wasn’t perfect. He was human after all. He had temptations and problems just like anyone else. He drank too much. He popped pills, lied to his wife and he had a long line of female admirers. But after he married June Carter, he claimed to have turned over a new leaf. He had even released an album called “Hymns by Johnny Cash” which was a Gospel album that turned out to be a success financially. It also smoothed things over in his difficult relationship being in the public eye for much of his life.
Cash was once quoted as saying “When God forgave me, I figured I better do it too.” A noble statement made by a sinner. But did Johnny actually “walk the line” as he sang in his 1956 song of the same name? After a new book came out recently, it appears that Johnny may have been a hypocrite... or at the very least too weak to stay away from drugs, booze or women.
Trouble seemed to follow “The Man In Black” throughout much of his career. And relatives and business associates sometimes claimed his public affirmation of finding religion and living a clean life were hollow-- and he hadn’t changed his partying and playboy lifestyle.
Country music and religion have always been closely related. Country music is steeped in the “Bible Belt” after all.
Very few “fallen angels” of country music have been able to keep their popularity at the top for very long after too many transgressions. Merle Haggard, Hank Williams Jr., Toby Keith and others have had to deal with fallout from their bad boy behavior.
How did Johnny Cash get around this? Seems like June Carter kept many of his secrets.
