Do you think George Harrison would have laughed?

I would like to think George Harrison had a good sense of humor.   He was called the “sensitive” Beatle, the “quiet” Beatle and often times the “spiritual” Beatle.  He was also a great songwriter and was the first to have a #1 hit after the group broke up.  His critically acclaimed album All Things Must Pass is considered one of the best post-Beatles albums by any of the foursome.

But he was also a fan of good humor- I mean the guy bankrolled Monty Python’s The Life of Brian and was close friends with the comedy troupe after all.  Producer George Martin would mention there were nights Harrison wanted to talk about Martin’s work with Peter Sellers, Peter Cooke or dozens of other comedians whose albums he had recorded prior to The Beatles. Which is why I think he would find this story funny.

Shortly after George died in 2001, a tree was planted in Griffith Park in Los Angeles in honor of Harrison.  This inscription on the plaque placed at the foot of the pine tree read:

“In memory of a great humanitarian who touched the world as an artist, a musician and a gardener.”

But in 2004, the tree had to be cut down.  

It had grown ill after an infestation of… beetles. Yes, George Harrison’s memorial tree was killed by the beetles.  

George was probably laughing heartily over that one! 😊
